Richard Bassett

Richard Bassett(1745-1815)

Richard Bassett was born in Maryland in 1745.

He studied law in Philadelphia and set up his law practice in Delaware.

He was also a planter, owning three homes in Delaware and Maryland.

Bassett served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and participated in Delaware’s constitutional convention and state legislature.

At the Philadelphia Convention, Bassett made no speeches, but attended regularly.

Bassett later served as a U.S. Senator, a judge, and governor of Delaware.
