Hugh Williamson was born in Pennsylvania, the oldest child in a large family.
Educated to be a minister, he instead went to Europe to study medicine.
At the beginning of the Revolution, Williamson was in Europe where he wrote a pamphlet that urged English support for the American cause.
When he returned to America, he settled in North Carolina, where he practiced medicine, serving as surgeon-general for the state’s troops.
Williamson was an active delegate to the Philadelphia Convention, serving on five committees and debating skillfully.
He worked for ratification and served two terms in the U.S. House.
