Texas Teachers: We Want You!

Do you live in Texas? Do you teach middle school or high school government, civics, or U.S. history?
We call on our social studies teachers in the great state of Texas to help shape civic education through the We the People curriculum. We cordially invite you to participate in a pilot program using a brand-new inquiry-based resource to integrate We the People into your class. Focused on engaging strategies and inquiry-based pedagogies for diverse learners, learn how We the People is a transformative experience for teachers and students.

We the People Inquiry Companion

Project Description

The We the People Inquiry Companion is a multimedia resource designed to empower civic educators in their mission to provide transformative civic education for all students, especially those in high-needs communities. At the heart of our approach is the recognition that inquiry is the primary mode of instruction in the civic education classroom. It drives the most enriching and equitable practices. Civic education is not confined to the pages of a curriculum. Instead, it unfolds in dynamic spaces where students drive the questions, investigate constitutional history, experience democratic principles and processes firsthand, engage in civil dialogue, and channel their new knowledge, skills, and dispositions toward informed engagement with the world around them.

What Are the Benefits of Participation

  • Free class set of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution textbooks (or digital e-book access through Actively Learn)

  • Stipends for professional learning participation and pilot completion
  • Ongoing professional learning, including virtual and in-person options

Note: The Center for Civic Education can train and support your district if you want your whole civics teaching team to participate (e.g., all government teachers).

What Are the Participant...

Qualifications?
  • Texas social studies teacher (public, charter, or private school)
  • Teach underrepresented populations (students of color, low-income, rural, Indigenous populations, English learners, students with disabilities, and other impacted populations)
  • Currently teach civics, government, or U.S. history in grades 6-12
  • Will teach a significant portion of the course in the spring semester
  • Availability to participate in professional learning and mentor support from January-June 2024
