Establishing a Climate, Culture, and Context for Civic Action

Join the National Liberty Museum and the Center for Civic Education for an engaging workshop to equip educators with the tools and skills to establish a classroom environment primed for meaningful, student-led civic action. Attendees will be able to engage in creative and interactive activities rooted in museum learning and will be introduced to the Center for Civic Education’s new Civil Discourse Toolkit. Focusing on civic foundations, civil discourse, and meaningful dialogue, this session will present creative and valuable ways to help students and teachers develop a stronger sense of community and engage in responsible, informed citizenship.

Jenna Tshudy
Director of Learning and Engagement
National Liberty Museum

Jenna Tshudy is the Director of Learning and Engagement at the National Liberty Museum (NLM) in Philadelphia, where she develops student and teacher programs and manages the museum’s year-long civic action curriculum.

Previously, she worked for six years as the Education Manager for Historic Philadelphia, Inc. She is the President of Philadelphia’s Historic Neighborhood Consortium, serves as Co-Chair of the Young Friends of Wyck Historic House, Garden, and Farm in Germantown; and volunteers as a Judge for National History Day.

She has presented lectures and workshops both locally and at the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH), Small Museum Association (SMA), and National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) annual conferences, focusing on field trips and education programming at museums and historic sites. She is a graduate of Monmouth University in New Jersey with a BA in History and Secondary Education and an MA in History.

Dr. Donna Phillips
Vice President & Chief Program Officer
Center for Civic Education

Dr. Donna Phillips is the Vice President & Chief Program Officer for the Center for Civic Education, leading the Center’s ambitious strategic plan in development, implementation, and innovation of its national and international programs.

Prior to joining the Center, she was the Director of Academic Innovations for DC Public Schools and the Social Studies Curriculum Manager, where she spearheaded the development of C3 inquiry and social justice–aligned K-12 social studies curriculum. Dr. Phillips has participated in We the People for more than 20 years, serving as a We the People teacher, district coordinator and mentor, and the District of Columbia state coordinator.

She is a 2007 recipient of the American Civic Education Teacher Award. Her PhD in education policy and leadership, curriculum theory and development is from University of Maryland College Park. Her research on the lived experience of democratic civic education focused on the We the People program, winning the best dissertation award and appearing in several publications.
