Biographies

Buckner, John (1631-1695) John Buckner, born in England in 1631, died in Virginia in 1695. He married Debora Ferrers, born in England, died in Virginia, their marriage being solemnized in London, July 10, 1661, by the Vicar General of Canterbury. In 1667 they settled in Gloucester county, Virginia. John Buckner brought the first printing press and printer from England in 1683 and in that year is recorded as a member of the Virginia house of burgesses.

Dyer, Mary (1611-1660) Born in England, Dyer and her husband emigrated to Boston in 1635. As a Quaker who preached ideas unpopular with the Puritan leaders of Boston, she was banned from the city under threat of death. When she returned, she was arrested and hanged publicly on June 1, 1660.

Zenger, John Peter (1697-1746) Printer and editor. Served as editor of an anti-government newspaper and, in 1733, was arrested for seditious libel. His defense was handled by Andrew Hamilton who urged jury to consider the truth of Zenger's statements. The jury did so, Zenger was acquitted, and his name became linked with freedom of the press.
