Civil War The war between the Northern and Southern states. It took place from 1861 to 1865 and ended slavery in the United States.
slave trade The business of taking people from their homes in Africa and selling them in the colonies.
three-fifths clause The Framers' compromise about slavery that became part of the Constitution. It counted each slave as three-fifths of a person to determine how many representatives a state would have in Congress.
